March 27 - April 2 - Karen's Tuesday visit with the surgeon went
well, he said that no surgery is necessary on the sore at this time but the healing
process could take as long as 6 - 9 months. Karen also has to spend less time up and
about -- she is still allowed to be up 4 hours/day but now can only stay up for 2 hours of
it at a time. The standing frame that they ordered is supposed to arrive this week or
next so Karen will be able to spend as much time as she wants standing since that won't put
any pressure on the sore, plus it will help her circulation and thus help healing. Karen
wants to send her and her family's thanks to St. Monica's for providing dinners in March,
and to St. Ann's for dinners in April. There will be more details about the 5/20 benefit
golf tournament posted this week.
April 3 - 9 - Finally some good news to report this week - Karen's
back is healing well so she no longer has restrictions based on her back. Her sore is also
starting to heal, slowly but surely, but she still has all the restrictions associated with
it (staying in bed). She received her standing frame this week and is starting to
stand in it, she has to take it easy at first because she gets dizzy standing up since she
is used to sitting and laying -- there will be pictures of Karen standing in her frame posted
soon. Karen went to the Cardinal's game today (4/9) with Tim and the girls and was treated
to a Mark McGwire home run. Click here for the details about the
April 10 - 16 - Karen got some bad news from a bone scan this
week, the infection from her sore has spread to the bone. They took a culture of the
infection to find out how to best treat it and Karen will find out tomorrow how that will
be done -- most likely it will be with intravenous antibiotics. Karen is still getting
acclimated to, and spending more time in, her standing frame. There is a new picture at
the top of the web page with Karen in her standing frame (there's also a new picture of her
with her girls). There is still room for participants in the Karen Weir Benefit Golf
Tournament, click here to find out how to sign up
.
April 17 - 23 - Karen had to go back in the hospital this week
for intensive treatment of her sore. She spent Tuesday night through Saturday in the
hospital but got to come home in time for Easter, which she spent quietly at home.
While she was in the hospital she had a bone scraping procedure to remove the infected
bone areas. She's looking forward to more healing this week. There's only one more week
before the deadline for the Karen Weir Benefit Golf Tournament, click the button in the
previous two updates for more information.
April 24 - 30 - Karen is still restricted to only 2 hours out
of bed at a time while her wound continues to heal and she is hooked up to an
antibiotic IV that should clear up the infection. She will see doctors almost every
day this coming week for an assessment of the sore and she'll be fitted with a
"wound-vac" to suction the drainage from the sore. She got out for some fun this weekend to
see one of Amanda's soccer games. The enrollment deadline for the Karen Weir Benefit Golf
Tournament has been extended for one more week so be sure to sign up!
