Tim was at the first table on the right with all his bills and life spread out before him. I waited a moment. (I hate to be disturbed when I am paying bills...) He said I could go in to see her if I absolutely said nothing. She had had "an agitated morning" and she needed her rest. I went in and was stopped by Nurse Stella who told me some of the reasons she had an agitated morning. She had to have the bite tube replaced last night cause she had bit her tongue. The bite tube was too large. Pressed on her throat. Made her gag. She threw up. Stella replaced a smaller bite tube this morning in anticipation of feeding her soon by mouth. Stella also had decreased the respirator. For every 18 breaths, she is breathing 14 on her own. Yay! As I quietly stood by Karen, Stella came in and said she had to draw blood. Since Karen is being fed a glucose rich mix, they have to check her sugar frequently. Stella chose Karen's right hand thinking she would be less sensitive. No. This woke Karen and she remembered how she hates that stuff in her mouth which began her anxiety cycle of thrashing. By now an African chaplain was making his rounds and had Karen's left hand which gave her some comfort. Stella had to draw blood for another test from one of the red capped tubes on Karen's right mid-section. (Good news cause she didn't have to stick Karen again but why can't the sugar test be done from this red-capped tube place?) Stella had to give K a sedative which quieted her, thank G-d.
